Abstract
I have benefited greatly from Dr. Beal's class, Foundations of Middle Years Education. It provides the cornerstones of my Synthesis design project. At the beginning of her class, she told us her teaching philosophy. She said students must enjoy her class first. Gradually, I accepted her teaching philosophy and developed my own teaching philosophy. My teaching philosophy is that students must enjoy my class even at the cost of learning. That doesn't mean I will only tell funny jokes in my class. What I want to teach is that students should develop the connection between happiness and learning.
Today we are living in a fast developing society. No skills that you have learned at school can guarantee employment throughout a lifetime. We should educate our students to be lifelong learners. If students associate learning with hard work and endurance, there is no way they can be lifelong learners. Learning should be meaningful. It can benefit your own life. It should be a positive process.
The second thing that I learned from Dr. Beal's class is the concept of disciplined mind. Ideas and theories are good, but I must be good at some concrete skills. Through the whole period of learning at NCSU, I have mainly concentrated on the concrete knowledge. Thus, I got my compelling question. I will integrate enjoyment, digital technology, young adult literature, movies and video games into a whole new way of teaching physics.
The framework is based on the idea of the flipped classroom. According to the description given by a commercial company, techsmith, " Instead of doing lectures during class and book work at home, reverse it. Create video lessons your students can watch on their own time, then come to class prepared for higher-order thinking and interaction." I will fully develop this concept of teaching. Before class I will make online videos. In class I will develop a corresponding procedure that can deepen the knowledge students learned by themselves. Mainly, I will integrate these strategies that can make students enjoy learning.
